Group members have developed an outdoor math trail in the school yard and neighbouring conservation area. This trail creates an atmosphere of adventure and exploration leading to communication of mathematical ideas that are the focus of the trail. Discovery sites on the trail have been mapped and photographed by group members using digital technology. At each site students observe, measure, collect, and record data, in order to solve a math problem either at the location or back in the classroom.
While using the trail, students use mathematics concepts studied in the classroom and begin to understand how mathematics is used in daily life. Teachers from other schools who become involved in the project can observe the math trail in action and create their own trail, using the digital data samples recorded in still photo, audio, and video format.
